TANKAR Gardencoffee: Organically grown at the source of the Nile

The secret of TANKAR Gardencoffee

While it is easy to grow good Arabica, there are just a few special Robusta plantations like TANKAR-Coffee which surprises gourmets and coffee experts. It is difficult to find a coffee having a stronger and fruitier taste than TANKAR-Coffee - we are proud to serve you a rare coffee with a complex body and a natural earthy aroma.

The secret of the strong and fruity body of TANKAR-Coffee is based on the three TANKAR characteristics.

  1. The specific wild & indigenous environment
  2. The specific slow treatment
  3. The specific sustainable gardenfarms

TANKAR flavours develop in a wild & indigenous environment!

Wild & indigenous environment

Our Karagwe Highland is assumed to be the ancient source of the Nile, in Karagwe’s mild Highland the Coffea Robusta evolved in the shady understorey of thick East African vegetation.

While the sensitive Arabica requires an industrially-controlled environment, Robusta coffee is perfect for growing wild and organically.

Our secret to the strong and fruity TANKAR-Flavour lies in extensive farming - we grow TANKAR-Coffee similar to how Wild coffee grows. TANKAR-Coffee is only harvested in garden farms where a only few plants are grown per acre. No mass-production, no harvesting machines – a high plant density, grown organically in small garden farms – a nearly wild growth.

Slow treatment

TANKAR grows slowly!

TANAKR coffee grows slowly, because taste needs time to mature- like a in good French-red-wine that needs time to develop its complex taste.

Therefore we grow our TANKAR-Coffee under shade in the chilly highlands of East-Africa. A slow growing plant remains with more energy for developing natural sugars and enhancing flavours. Adding chemical fertilizers is forcing plants to grow too fast for sugars to be be stored in the fruit –TANKAR's organic gardenfarming provides natural nutrients that enable the coffee plants to grow slowly, indigenous & wild.

Sustainable gardenfarms

TANKAR farmers grow in sustainable gardenfarms!

Traditional organic gardenfarming is something that has survived in Africa for centuries. Our small farmers have never seen an advantage in industrial agricultural production where just one, chemically-treated-crop is planted on each field Our farmers have remained with their sustainable gardenfarms with coffee, bananas, beans and maize together in one small familygarden.

They do not use harvesting machines, instead they pick only the best coffee cherries with their own hands. Furthermore, our farmers do not create any waste as all ingredients are organic and part of natural cycle between plant and earth.

Our TANKAR garden families are in close contact with one another and have a great sense of community. For example they are organized in saving & credit groups where they can support each other and invest in community projects, independent from big commercial banks.
